Re: Daishoho stats

In addition, Daishoho won two fighting spirit prizes. He defeated all (I
believe) of the present Yokozuna, but never after they attained their
highest rank, so Dai never earned a kinboshi. In late 1992 he was at the
height of his career, taking a jun-yusho!

When Ozeki Akebono was making his run for the top rank, the future Yokozuna
recorded one of his best performances, his second yusho, in the Kyushu
basho 1992. His 14-1 record was great, spoiled only by a sixth day loss to
Daishoho, ranked at that time at the top of Maegashira. Dai in that basho
marked a 9-6 record. He lost to Musashimaru, but beat Wakahanada and
Takahanada.

This is such a sad thing, as it always is to have anyone so youthful
afflicted by the dread cancer. Sumotori are strong of spirit and body, so
let's not speak of the man himself in the past tense until we have to; it's
bad enough that we must speak of his career in this past tense.
