Jun-toshiyori

Babanoshuzan asked: What is a "jun-toshiyori?

If a rikishi does not possess a traditional oyakata name (kabu or myoseki), he traditionally was not allowed to continue within the kyokai.

However, recently (last summer?) the rules were changed to allow prominent rikishi to gain oyakata status for a time while working to acquire the kabu.

Prominent is defined as 1 basho in sanyaku (or above) or 20 basho in makuuchi or 30 basho in makuuchi/juryo combined.

A quick search of the archive http://209.20.237.53/sumo/index.html will fill in any other questions you may have about jun-toshiyori.
