This is simple economics. Traditionally the money given as a wedding
present goes up in odd numbers, \10,000, \30,000, then \50,000 (that's a
yen sign, in case it comes out funny on your screen). Low-paid youngsters
used to be able to give ten thousand at a colleague's wedding, but when the
cost of weddings went up, the jump from ten to thirty was too big, and
consensus emerged that twenty would have to do.
