Sumo scandals reach the British press
Normally Sumo features not at all in the UK press, but there was a
surprisingly good article in 'The Guardian' on Saturday 30 January.
Over half a page (of broadsheet), two good colour pictures and a
solecism-free article filed by 'Jonathan Watts in Tokyo' - well done
him. The article does rather dwell on the current problems of the
Hanada family, and potential damage to the standing of Sumo, making a
comparison with the British royal family. It is pretty sympathetic and
level-headed though, and well written. The pictures show a Takanohana
dohyo-iri - I guess at a shrine since it is certainly not on the dohyo -
and Wakanohana beating (I think) Minatofuji by (it looks like)
hatakikomi.
