Well according to the article he did 20 'udetatefuse' - pushups.  

I am not sure about Konishiki but there is no doubt that Akebono in
good shape can do quite a few more pushups.

I suspect the direct cause of his injury this time was him doing every
day over 100 squat jumps with over 200 lb bar on his shoulders.     

I am sure he can bench press 300-400 lbs no problem   
Some of the rikishis are in superb physical condition. I heard one
time now retired Kyokudozan could run 100 meters in less than 12
seconds.

They may weigh a lot but they are no couch potatoes.
