Re: Request for Help

Greg -

Sounds like a neat picture and a great find. However, I wonder if it is
a sumo-related woodblock print (nishiki-e) that has been copied
onto glass. However, that is neither here nor there, from the names listed
I could quickly find the following info:

* Tsuneyama
Promoted to Makuuchi October 1843
Komusubi, November 1850
Sekiwake, November 1856 (changed shikona to Tatsutagawa)

* Koyanagi
Previous shikona of 6th Yokozuna (Oonomatsu) 1828 - 1835
(or)
Ozeki (1852-1856)
(or)
Maegashira (1905-1911)

* Kagamiyama
Could this possibly be Kagamiiwa (the last character IWA is YAMA over ISHI) who was
Promoted to Makuuchi October 1837 (as Wadanoura)
Changed to Kagamiiwa February 1838
Promoted to Ozeki, November 1850

Now making the leap of faith, I suspect that the picture dates from around the 1850's.
(No luck (yet) locating the other names you mentioned.)

If the basis was originally a nishiki-e, a popular artist of nishiki-e was Toyokuni II (aka Kunisada).
