A friend of mine had exactly the same situation. I have introduced several of
my co-workers to sumo here in SoCal. We have a sushi safari to the same sushi
bar on the third Tuesday of each month. Being somewhat large persons we spend
a lot of money there. In appreciation the owner (only he and his wife work
there) brought sumo calendars back when he made a trip home to Japan. My
friend hung his at work. In a few days management asked him to take it down
as it was offensive. They wouldn’t say who was offended.
I thought his reaction was very inventive. We each have cubicles at work and
out projects are often of a sensitive nature. So he moved the calendar to a
place where you can’t see it unless you are inside the cubicle. In it’s
original place he hung an outdoors calendar open to a month which has a
picture of 2 pheasants. He attached a 3M sticker to the picture that says,
“This is the double bird.”
This was several weeks ago and no complaints yet. I guess those who are so
easily offended may not be able to read or perhaps think. Stupidity is alive
and well in SoCal.
