My theory, fully backed by my very diet-knowledgable GP, is that the reason you
get BIG on chanko-nabe is the combination of:

 - Working out straight from bed on an empty stomach

 - Eating lots and lots of nabe for lunch washed down with beer etc

 - FINALLY AND MOST IMPORTANTLY having a noon-nap straight after lunch with
   no activity  between the two.  After such a big lunch your system's
   matabolism is all dressed up with high concentrations of insulin and
   glucose-enzymes (Amylasis and glycosidasis) but when you sleep it has no
   where to go so it has to deposit the energy some where.

I am using this a lot in reverse.  I rarely eat late but if I do I have as
light a meal as possible and always try and do some physical activity before
going to bed.  10 minute run, push-ups or something like it.
