AFAIK,  he graduated in Economics. So did Ryogoku, now Nakadachi oyakata;
so, I belive, did Dewanohana, now Dekiyama oyakata.  In fact, I think
there's a strong tradition for Nichidai sumoists to do Economics.
 
PS  AFAIK= as far as I know
