Sumotori Freezing in Nagano

I quote from my first aid pocket guide:  "Bodies are affected by outside
temperatures.  Water in our skin can crystallize and freeze, causing abnormal
function and sensation.  Toes, noses, fingers and ears are the most commonly
affected areas.  Frostbite and hypothermia are the two emergencies associated
with cold exposure.  Hypothermia can be life-threatening and must be treated
immediately."

Mondai:  Why are sumotori different from the rest of us?
a.  They don't have toes, noses, fingers or ears.
b.  The water in their skin can no longer crystallize and freeze, due to
repeated blows sustained during butsukari keiko.  At least, in the chest area.
c.  They are sumotori, therefore the laws of physiques don't apply.

Does anyone know if they will be wearing footwear?
