My father-in-law occasionally sends me videos of game shows featuring the
rikishi, and Musashimaru is constantly calling people motherfucker and so
forth, and when he's gabbing with Konishiki he's pretty crude. Of course, I
assume none of this is ever quoted, if even noticed, by the Japanese press, but
I certainly was surprised. Konishiki certainly goofs around on those things,
but he never seemed to be making fun of anyone or being mean. Maru, however,
comes across as rather obnoxious. On the other hand, when maru is doing
exhibition sumo with the swarm of little kids trying to push him over, he looks
like he'd be about the best uncle possible. A textbook example of a goofy
smile. And I really like his attitude in general, regardless of how
appropriate it may be for sumo, in that he is definitely doing things at his
own pace on his own terms. Which is why I think he'll be about 75 when he
makes Yokozuna...
Also, somewhere along the line I watched Akebono after he had shoved Wakanohana
into the 8th row, and he said something very emphatic as he was walking across
the dohyo. I rewound the tape several times and watched his mouth and I'm
pretty sure he said "bastard", but my wife remains unconvinced and thinks he
said "better".
Well, that was a fairly content-free post. We now return you to civilized
programming.
