Fans in the Greater Vancouver area will be able to watch sumo digests on TV
up to next June when the big tournament is staged in Vancouver, presumably
to hike up interest. The multicultural channel of the Rogers Television
Cable will be presenting telecasts, starting with the Kyushu Basho just
concluded. Today, day 1 of the Kyushu Basho was presented, tomorrow day 2,
etc. The telecasts are of 1/2 hours duration, and consists of all 15
matches, but without any preliminaries--glowering, salt-throwing, rig
sweeping, false starts, etc. The voice is in Japanese, but for each match
the names of the contestants are given, along with height, weight, home
port, heya, and rank printed in English. At the end of each match the
kimarite is given as well. Telecasts are given at 0830 PST and repeated at
midnight.
