Sumo LITE...very lite ("Who's Genki?")
1. "Who's Genki?"
So glad that we've established protocols to sort the massive flow of sumo
ML e-mail since the last basho. In response to those who have posted
messages asking, "who's genki?": Since the advent of the highly competitive
ML hoshitori, there only two people remain willing to inform non-readers of
Japanese who's genki, and three of them are lying. To combat this trend, I
will submit a list comprised solely of lame rikishi: Konishiki 13,
Musoyama 12, Kaio 11, Kenko 10, Musashimaru 9, Oginishiki 8, Akebono 7 ....
2. "Who's Genki?"
In a continuing effort to serve those in this highly mobile modern world,
who need up-to-date information on the health of rikishi, even while
traveling and unable to check their e-mail, we are pleased to announce the
FOURTH in a series of prize-winning collectible (and portable) t-shirts --
Entitled "Who's Genki?" -- The front of this t-shirt (available only in
XXL) bears a faithful reproduction, in red and black, of the tegata of a
well known Hawaiian rikishi, along with the words "Who's Genki?" The back
bears an attractive matching color image of the man. Buy it, and not only
may knowledgeable people approach and answer your question, but young women
will find it hard to resist placing a hand over the huge handprint on your
chest!
Previous t-shirts in this series include the following:
a. Our inaugural t-shirt, issued in 1976 to celebrate the U.S.'s 200th
year, bearing the profile of an American bison beneath the word
"Bisontennial." On July 3, 1976, while wearing this shirt in the Albany,
NY, bus station, I was approached by an admirer who said, "Great t-shirt!
What's the buffalo for?"
b. A purple and green number, insanely popular with parents, bearing the
words "SUBMIT TO BARNEY"
c. A plain 100% cotton tee, issued by my sons on my 40th birthday, which
states, "Invisible to teenage girls."
3. "Who's Genki?"
I have spent most of the last six weeks, since the end of the last basho,
lying in bed trying to think of rhymes for "plastic dohyo." After
rejecting "yoyo" and "Oh, no!", matters have grown increasingly difficult
and ultimately upsetting. I have been having trouble sleeping. I lie
awake wondering who's genki. Then I generate e-mail like this.
So... who IS genki?
