There are apparently a lot of new sumotori with us, and I can't find the
original of the message I sent to this list some months ago concerning
the situation, so I'll summarize:

NHK, in the process of an internal reorganization last spring, killed
off "Dateline Japan" and disbanded the team. There was such a global
howl of protest over the insipid substitute (for which they began
charging public TV stations, and on which sumo was not covered) that
they've promised all the former subscribers of their feed that they will
reassemble the production team and produce a show not unlike that which
so many of us enjoyed.....and that there will be at least as much
coverage, and perhaps more, of sumo during bashos. It was then
anticipated that they might have their "fun" together in time to cover
Aki basho.....we will see. As for Jaiun, she was considered successful
and is said to have gone on to bigger and better things with some sort
of show of her own on domestic NHK (any reports from resident gaijin?),
and apparently Risa Shishido is headed in the same direction.

Gambaremassssssssss.........
