Re: Hoshitori Web Page!

At 08:47 AM 4/7/97 -0500, you wrote (privately, but the info below may be
helpful to all, so please forgive me for posting to the list as well):

David,
No offense was taken here by your comments, but I think you
misunderstand the differences between the various games. You
probably aren't alone :)

The ISP is essentially the same as the Compuserve game. We
make a pick on a daily match- the same match, in fact, as reposted
to this list from the Compuserve "Japan Forum".

The Hoshitori contest is completely different. As far as I know, it has
no special ties to Compuserve, but only to this mailing list. In the
Hoshitori,
an entrant predicts, before the basho begins, how the rikishi will perform.
You enter a slate of rikishi in order of your predicition. The rikishi that
you think will have the best record is put in your #1 position, which gives
you the maximum points for each win he gets. You continue your picks
for what you think will be the 13 most successful rikishi, with each one
getting fewer points per win, down to your 13th favorite, who gets only one
point for each win each day. Total points are added up to determine the
winner of the Hoshitori contest.

The sumo pools, whether the ISP, or the "World Famous Sumo Pool"
or "CIS" pool, require a daily entry on each day's featured match, and
the winner is simply the one who wins the most days in the 15 days of the
tournament. The only real difference is that non-Compuserve people
can't access the Compuserve Japan Forum, so they can simply enter
the "all-internet" ISP instead.

Does this make sense? I'm a little bit uncomfortable trying to explain
the Hoshitori, given my hideous performance in it lately :)

BTW, it's Carlson, Dale, Puyallup, WA USA, 37 :)

Take care,
Dale
