Re: Japanese Sumo Magazine Recommendations
"Sumo" is semi-official publication recognized by Sumo Kyokai
and published by Baseball Magazine-sha. It is relatively less
critical of what Sumo Kyokai does. Published 12 times a year,
preview issue and review issue for each of 6 hon-basho.
"O-Zumo" is published by Yomiuri Shimbun-sha and more
oppinionated than "Sumo". With more suggestions and ideas for
Sumo Kyokai. I think "O-zumo" is more interesting than "Sumo",
though the one I subscribe is actually "Sumo" but not "Ozumo".
I also subscribe "NHK Weekly Sterra". This publication is not
particularly dedicated to sumo, but they publish 6 issues,
preview for each of 6 basho. The purpose of this magazine is
to make it a companion to the TV viewers.
There is another magazine from Baseball Magazine-sha, but
I don't remember the correct name. It is something like "Van
Van ......" Its focus is sumo fans and their activities. If you like
to know rikishi's private life and their hobby, etc., and/or
younger and/or lower-rank rikishi, this is a good one to have.
