Sumo on TV

Last week I was in Budapest, Hungary, and saw videotapes of the recent basho
on EuroSport. Each day's broadcast contained three days' matches. It was very
interesting, even though the commentary was in Hungarian and was
incomprehensible to me.

On prior trips I have watched each day's match on NHK, which is broadcast in
the larger hotels. On those occasions it is only one day at a time, and is
broadcast very late in the evening.

I noticed that after Akebono lost in the final days, the crowd threw the white
cushions in the air. I presume this implies that they were dissatisfied with
the performance or the result. I was a little surprised in that it seemed out
of character for Japanese to behave like that. I have to agree that it didn't
look as if he tried very hard.

Just a few observations from a fan of thirty years.
