Thank you for the Konishiki report. I always appreciate your
insightful posts.
The match is considered the main reason why Konishiki did
not reach to Yokozuna. In the match, Konishiki tried to support
the total weight of the two giants with leggs and failed. His
right leg was twisted and messed up his knee. Kitao won the
match with "Sabaori", and Konishiki could not get up by himself.
It's one of the ugliest scenes in sumo history, in my opinion.
Every time when I see this video, it gives me a chill. If he did
not hurt his knee, he could have relatively healthy knees and
I truly believe he could reached to Yokozuna rank rather smoothly.
After this match, Konishiki was not the same and with trying
to protect his bad knee, he hurt his better knee later, also. Even
with two healthy legs, it's not very easy task to support that
massive body. With knowing his knee condition, and his lower
back condition, he must be one of the most couragious rikishi in
recent years of sumo.
