I found the following as an answer to your question.

Konishiki was 8-7 during his first basho as a Maku(no)uchi rikishi
and he was promoted to M-6 the next basho. He faced two yokozuna,
Chiyonofuji and Takanosato, and defeated both. In addition, he won
against Wakashimazu, Ohnokuni, Kirishima, but lost to Kotokaze on
Senshuraku. Konishiki's record was 12-3 and won both Shukun-sho
and Kanto-sho.

He was only 5-6-4 the next basho as a new sanyaku rikishi and
it was his first yasumi as a Maku(no)uchi rikishi. The last bout
was against Tagaryu on day 10th and Konishiki lost.

His infamous bout against Kitao was the year after, I believe.
