This is exactly what I meant. I can't imagine him gracefully hopping
around edge of the dohyo and getting the advantage back on his
opponent. Thinking about this has led to another thought or question
related to the rikshi who are percieved to be very skillfull.
Some of the rikishi have been very good Judo players in the past and
this definately gives them a bag of tricks that the
non-judo-background rikishi don't have. Is there any disadvantage in
having a judo background? Are judo-like moves seen as second class to
real sumo moves?
In the recent 2 day knock-out tournament, (I think it was) Kotonishiki
who threw Terao by catching Terao's outstretched hand and whipping it
around as you would with a towel. Terao did a roll in the air and held
his arm close to his body for a long time after the throw. It was one
of the most unusual defeats that I have seen and looked like something
more like proffesional wrestling than sumo.
