Re: Hoshitori: New Banzuke Proposal

Hello! I want to first of all thank everyone participating in the discussion
about changing the hoshitori banzuke... I am excited to see so many people
contributing and encourage others (even if you are new!!!) to do the same...

It seems to me that we have, however, had a number of messages under this
subject recently with regards to the rules of the hoshitori contest itself,
but not with respect to the banzuke for the contest, which was the subject of
the original post.

Obviously the two are related... but it seems that most of the discussion is
revolving around a radical change where a cyber-rikishis score is decided by
their daily performance instead of their total performance. Furthermore, in
this new system, the order of the rikishi does not matter... all count equal.

These two changes seem so significant to me that instead it is more like a
completely new game than the one we currently have. This is aside to any of
the discussion on restricting which rikishi may be included in an entry.
Restricting which rikishi can be picked, or increasing the total number of
picks by one or two, are ideas which seem they can be incorporated into the
existing game, if that is what we decide. But the other ideas seem to me, IMHO,
to be better suited to a different game. I would miss my gin- and kin-boshi
bonuses, and having the hope that I could always make up for a miserable
performance one day by an outstanding performance. It may be true that this
is more sumo-accurate, but somehow it just does not hold the same appeal of
the current game to me.

There is a forum on Compuserve, as many of us know, that is similar to this
idea except that if you win or lose is based on the performance of one
rikishi instead of ten, and that rikishi changes every day. Just in case
anyone did not know and was interested, I thought I would mention it.

I would be interested in further discussion of possibly altering the hoshitori
contest, however I want to return to the separate (but somewhat related)
question of the hoshitori banzuke.

So far, the only real comment I have seen about it was an endorsement by
Totoro, so are there any who are opposed? And I agree with him that it is
not necessary to decide every possible amendment before we accept the general
idea as it currently stands. I realize it has only been a day since this
has been posted, but I just want to re-direct at least some of the conversation
to this question, instead of the hoshitori contest rules themselves.

Could we possibly have a separate subject header for the hoshitori contest
rules, just for the sake of clarity? Just a suggestion, maybe they are too
related to separated.

By the way, I am leaving my home of 22 years, Los Angeles, to move to
Washington D.C. on this Tuesday. I unfortuneately will miss all of July
basho, and will not be online again until sometime in August. So, I may
post once or twice more in the next few days, but I just wanted to say
a temporary so-long before I forgot. Thankx to everyone who makes the list
so special and contributes to my enjoyment and love of sumo. I fear my
account will explode with the flood of unread mail it will accumulate in the
next month... but I know the adminstrators pretty well... they will tolerate
me. ;-)

Take care all...
