I hope this is not the end of this discussion, because I find this
explanation not very convincing. Kaio and Musoyama show that it is possible
to score double figures, even with the Futagoyama domination. Furthermore,
Asahiyutaka managed to get kachi-koshi, which is really amazing considering
that he was quite lucky to get to komusubi in the first place. That my
pick Tosanoumi did not do very well, was maybe not such a big surprise. After
all, he already fell short in the previous basho and is apparently not yet
good enough to down the big guys. I also think he failed mentally in this
basho. After his winning streak of four was snapped on day 9, he just looked
like he surrendered himself to his faith, much like Kotonowaka and Kotonishiki.

Another underachiever not yet mentioned is Takatoriki. Being a Futagoyama
rikishi, combined with the breakdown of the three mentioned above, should
have made it easy for him to make kachikoshi. Yet he did not and lost some
bad bouts. If you beat Akebono eight times in a row in pre-basho keiko and
you do it again in the basho, you can not blame it on bad form or an injury.
I understand that he is not very popular here on this Futagoyama bashing
mailing list :-), but I was still wondering...

Ranboryuu
(Probably going back into lurking mode after the next Hoshitori :-) ).
