Some rikishi (wrestlers) are Buddhist and some are atheists, and some are even
Christians. There are no religious requirement to be a rikishi. 

Because of their tradition, sumo ceremonies are based on Shintoism. Although
Gyoji (referees) are not certified Shinto priests, they are the ones in
charge of
conduct all ceremonies based on Shinto tradition.

Also, they do "hounou sumo" which is to be offered to Shinto shrines.
