The Akebono/Tomonohano match was in January 1993, and it was among the
saddest I have ever watched. Tomo was at his highest rank, Komosubi, I
believe, and the match was early on in the basho. From my POV, Tomo won
for sure; but he lost on the second match after the mono-ii. This was
the fore-runner of a sucession of losses in the same basho, and also
marked the beginning of Tomo's decline. I have often wondered if things
would have been different for him if they allowed the win...
