I think your assumtion is right. 
Both Akebono and Wakanohana's cases are not "kosho" injuries.
Theoretically, Akebono could take a time to heal his condition 
as long as he (and Azumazeki Oyakata) wants.

On the other hand, Wakanohana will be demoted to Sekiwake
after next basho, if he could not record "kachikoshi" in Haru-
basho. If he could win 10 or more bouts at the basho right
after demotion from Ozeki, he will be promoted back to Ozeki
the next basho, but if he fails, he will be treated with any
other rikishi.

-Masumiriki (taking a new-year's break from Hoshitori. Akebono
and Wakanohana are just joining me to have a good time. ;-)
