Hatsu Basho: Day 1

Well, I thought I'd have this out last night, but
while getting the kids to sleep.....

Winners: Kimarite: Losers:

Tamakasuga oshidashi Kushimaumi
Kyokudozan yorikiri Mainoumi
Higonoumi yorikiri Tomonohana
Kirishima hatakikomi Daishi
Oginishiki hatakikomi Asanowaka
Aogiyama oshidashi Oginohana
Hamanoshima oshidashi Kasugafuji
Naminohana tsukiotoshi Daishoho
Konishiki yorikiri Asanosho
Kitakachidoki katasukashi Terao
Tochinowaka uwatenage Kotobeppu
Kenko sukuinage Asahiyutaka
Akinoshima yoritaoshi Minatofuji
Misugisato hatakikomi Kotonishiki
Kaio oshidashi Kotoinazuma
Takanonami yorikiri Kotonowaka
Musashimaru oshidashi Tosanoumi
Mitoizumi yoritaoshi Wakanohana
Takatoriki tottari Akebono
Takanohana tottari Musoyama

Kirishima and Konishiki had relatively easy wins
to start the year, thanks to unimaginative foes.
Takanonami looked strong in a good mawashi win
against Kotonowaka, who is usually quite good
but may still be feeling an old injury. New
upstart Tosanoumi had no luck against Musashi,
losing his second in a row to him. I suppose
it takes awhile to learn how to deal with the
super-tsuppari. Mitoizumi, up to 200 kg now,
was very active, not showing the pain in his
knees like he used to do, and beat Waka for
the 8th time in 13 tries. Akebono looked as
though his strength was gone yesterday, just
pushing but without the awesome power. And
Takatoriki just danced around it til he got
the arm grip and pulled Ake down. Not a good
show by the Yokozuna. I found it odd that the
next match was decided by tottari as well, but
at least it was a little more normal. Moose is
going to need to attack Taka to win, lately he
seems afraid and just plays defensively.

HOSHITORI NOTE:

Please don't send email to Ian or me asking
about the results. It'll be a bit til Ian gets
this all up and running. Sorry for the agony,
but it'll be together soon.

Hakke yoi!
