Re: Wajima
Shou:
Your memory is extraordinary.
It happened at Kyushu-basho in 1973.
On 12th day, Yokozuna Wajima beaten Ozeki Takanohana and
recorded 27th consecutive wins, but he got between index
finger and middle finger of right hand torn by about 3 cm. He
was hospitalized without staying in "tamari" at the bottom
of dohyo after his match, and had 6 stitches. The rikishi
involved in the match right before the last match of the day
not staying in "tamari" as a "hikew rikishi" is very unusual.
The next winningest rikishi after zensho Wajima after 12th
day were only Yokozuna Kotozakura and Sekiwake Kitanoumi
with 9-3 record. Also on the same day, Kitanoumi sprained
his left big toe badly during the match against Fujizakura.
They were both treated at the same hospital in Fukuoka,
Akimoto Hospital, but they did not know the other rikishi's
condition. Since there were three days left, there were still
a possibility of having a extra championship match "yusho
ketteisen" between both rikishi at that time.
The next day on 13th day, Wajima lost to Kitanofuji but the
yusho race was actually and officially over, because Kitanoumi
and Kotozakura both lost on the same day. Wajima could
concentrate on his treatment finally and take an absent for
the rest of the basho and accepted 12-2 (and 1 yasumi) and
more significantly a yusho.
Sekiwake Kitanoumi kept active in spite of his injury and
won against Daikirin on senshuraku. His record was 10-5 and
kept his hope to be promoted to ozeki in the near future.
That was the very last basho at Fukuoka Sports Center after
17 years of service to Ozumo.

Imagine, all the people living for today...no countries to kill or die for...
living life in peace...no possessions...sharing all the world...
You may say I am a dreamer, but I'm not the only one.
I hope someday you'll join us, and the world will live as one. (John Lennon)
