Ex-yokozuna hit for Y55 million in taxes

Tokyo Tax authorities have slapped former sumo grand champion
Chiyonofuji with Y55 million in back taxes and penalties for
failing to report Y130 million in personal income from 1990 to
1992, informed sources said Monday.

The former Yokozuna reportedly received Y60 million from members
of his support organization for the construction of a stable practice
hall, which is also the stablemaster's home.

The money is considered personal income by the tax authorities since
it was used to purchase the land for the stable and to repay some of
the stablemaster's personal debts, the sources said.

"I have left everything to the tax accountants. There appears to have
been a mistake," said the 40-year-old stablemaster.

According to a real estate registery, he purchased 416 square meters of
land in Tokyo's Sumida Ward between September 1983 and May 1992 and a
new practice hall and home was erected on the site in May 1993.
