Re: A history question

Steve:

Chiyonofuji's first yusho was at Hatsu-basho in 1981 with
14-1 record. He was promoted to Ozeki after the basho.
He stayed in Ozeki only for three basho and his record
at ozeki was 11-4, 13-2 and 14-1 (yusho).
The last match as an ozeki was, as you remember, against
Yokozuna Kitanoumi on senshuraku. His record was 14-1 but
one of his 14 wins was a fusensho against Dewanohana.
His first basho as a yokozuna was sort of desaster with
the record 1-2 (one of his loss was a fusempai) and 12
yasumi. I believe he sprained his ancle very badly.
The very next basho he won yusho with his ancle wrapped
with tapes. He said afterword that this was his most
memorable yusho (his third) ever. Kokonoe Oyakata and
he throught about the possibility of retiring if he failed
in comeback.

So you are right. His first basho as ozeki was Haru-basho,
his first basho as yokozuna was Aki-basho. His yusho record
this year were:

Hatsu (sekiwake) 14-1
Nagoya (ozeki) 14-1
Kyushu (yokozuna) 12-3
