Re: O-zumo Tournament (Day 2)
Mike:
Unfortunately for Maenoumi, any tornament other than 6 15-day hon-basho
(hatsu, haru, natsu, nagoya, aki, kyushu) will be totally meaningless to
any ranking changes. Even when Nagoya-basho and Kyushu-basho were 15-day
jun-basho, they were meaningless in terms of promotion/demotion.
For TV broadcasting corporations other than NHK (Mimpoh), these tornaments
are the only opportunities to broadcast sumo matches in live coverage.
For Sumo Kyokai, they are good opportunities to promote Ozume as a national
sport, balancing with NHK. It will be a good income opportunities, also.
For sumo fans, they are the only chances to see the matches between
brothers and rikishi from the same heya, and dream about matches between
cross-heya rivals (kojin-betsu so-atari).
By the way, minna-san is a wrong Japanese expression. It should be
mina-san. Minna (without
-san) is used very often but it's very informal. No Japanese use minna-san.
