I believe the rule states that if the injury occured during a bout the
rikishi will not be demoted for the next tournament. Therefore, I believe
Kotonishiki and Musoyama will not be demoted for the next basho. I don't
know the rule if the rikishi can't compete in the following basho, maybe
Masumi-san can help. I do know that an injury occuring off the doyo does
not give the rikishi the same protection. There was an instance several
years ago where a rikishi was waiting his turn and someone fell on his leg
and broke it. He was demoted for the following basho and soon thereafter
fell to Juryo and still further and soon thereafter retired from sumo.
