Speaking of robot sumo, I read in the November 1994 issue of 
"the institute" (an IEEE newspaper) about a robot sumo tournament
held in San Francisco.  It is sponsored by the Robotics Society
of America (RSA).

According to the article, last year's event was the 9th annual
meeting.  Many of the rules described by Ivar Petersen in the original 
posting were the same.  In fact, the winner of this tournament was
hoping to get sponsored for a trip to the All Japan tournament
being held in December (?).  I don't know if they made it.

If anyone is interested in more information about the U.S. version
of robot sumo, I still have the original newspaper article.  There
are some phone numbers listed which you can call.  Send me some
email if you want them.
