It is not surprising really that Musashimaru was not promoted
because of that 9-6 mark, although if you compare the 2- and
3-basho totals he stacks up just about average for other Yokozuna
promotions. Konishiki's is more of a surprise. I did not start
following sumo until July of '92, so I was not aware of just how
well Sally was doing back then. He certainly was better than most
of his near predecessors in records and rankings. I now understand
why he was so bitterly disappointed. On the other hand, had he
been promoted he would have been forced to retire over a year ago,
so it extended his career ;-)

Now that would be exciting. I can't see Wakanohana getting
promoted after anything short of a zensho, though. Both his record
and Musashimaru's record from Nagoya are somewhat tainted in that
the Yokozuna was absent. Given Wakanohana's kosho (is that the
right term for taking a breather in May?), I think nothing short of
a zensho yusho with a victory over the yokozuna would be necessary
for him to be promoted. I also think that Musashimaru should get a
promotion with any record that gets him at least a junyusho (at
least I am hoping since I am a big Musashimaru fan ;-).

Thanks for all of the great info Abe-san!
