Akebono's surgery
OK, I have no morals. This AP article appeared in today's
Spokesman-Review as I entered it (but possibly without the typos).
Los Angeles -- American-born sumo champion Akebono underwent double
knee surgery Wednesday but is expected to compete in an important
tournament at Nagoya, Japan, on July 3.
"He had tears of cartilage in both knees," said Dr. Michael Schreiber,
who assisted Dr. Daniel Silver in the arthroscopic procedure at
Century City Hospital. "They were minor tears, but they were not
going to get better on their own, so they were removed
arthroscopically."
Schreiber said the surgery on the 6'8", 500-pound wrestler took
about 2 hours.
"It is our belief that he'll be able to compete in the summer grand
sumo tournament," Schreiber said. "We feel he'll have a full and
complete recovery and will be competing in July. He will be under
a very strict rehabilitation program and nutrition program under
the supervision of Jeff Libengood, his trainer."
**** end of article ****
So, it wasn't Dr. Jobe that did the surgery. Oh well, I've been
wrong before. It's good to see that he is under a strict nutrition
program which, hopefully, means he will get back into a good
fighting weight.
