Takanohana

I agree whole heartedly with Abe's analysis. No one can doubt Taka's
determination, or dedication to the sport but....
Youkozuna isn't/shouldn't be simply a popularity contest. No one should
be promoted simply because the people (non Sumo Kyokai) want it or just
because it is felt that another Yokozuna is needed.
According to the book 'Grand Sumo' the standard for promotion to Yokozuna
is at least 36 wins over the past 3 basho. Usually is is higher that that.
Taka can not reach this level even if he Zensho Yushos this basho (which
is impossible now anyway).
There is a mental toughness and state of mind required of all Yokozuna
that isn't expected from other rikishi. Taka hasn't proved to me that he
has that. He hasn't yet proved that he can put together a string of wins
anytime he choses. He hasn't yet proved that he can be the master of the
dohyo when he choses to. AND he needs to demonstrate these before he can
be promoted to Yokozuna. Need we remember when Konishiks was denied after
winning 2 basho in 1991. Even with the Yusho they say he didn't have the
mental readyness. Neither does Taka.
