Sumo FAQ

Well, the Haru Basho is over now, it's break time for some of the
academic types, and getting to be hanami season here in Japan (at
least in the warmer areas south of where I am!!).

I've got some time before classes start here, and am willing to put
together a FAQ for the list members. I suppose I could sit here and
copy Lorna Sharnoff's book onto the screen and save it, but that's
not really a good idea (besides, I might get caught :-P ) and not
what I'd like to accomplish. In checking the list today, I see that
we have 113 members, which is quite a sizeable database to be able
to tap into for this.

A while ago, I wrote up the descriptions of the 70 sumo techniques,
which I plan to update for better clarity. There are other areas
which would be good in a FAQ, such as important sumo records, what
happens at the tomoe-sen (I think Richard Webb has a handle on this
one!), names of items around the heya and the dohyo, what info is
on the banzuke and so on. I'll basically leave it up to you all,
as you are the list. Whatever you send in, try to make it as
accurate as possible. I'll include your e-mail address along with
the text so we can see who to send info to for updates/corrections.
Everyone has some area of interest that's different, so send me
whatever you think would be fun (this isn't class, ya know!!).

As far as locating this FAQ, I don't know where it'll be kept yet,
but Chris Basten will let me know if we can keep it at majordomo.
Film at 11:00.....

Otherwise, I'm getting a scanner soon, and can make some scans of
some sumo pix from time to time (when I think to buy some sumo
mags, for example). I have no place to make them available to
the world here, so if someone has an ftp site, I'll send them on
to you. As not everyone has ftp capability, it would be nice if
the site supports transfer via e-mail, though this might be hard
to ask for in this case. The pix tend to be in black and white
a lot of the time, so they might not be really big files. For
those of you who don't own the utilities to view them, there are
literally hundreds of ftp sites around the planet that have the
shareware/freeware you need. Most user groups have them, too.
If you're on a Mac, I can send you what you need (worst case
scenario where you really can't get them any other way, please).

This is getting rather long, so time to punch outta here for now.

I'll be looking forward to your submissions!!

Mata nee....
