|I agree that all the "exhibition" tournaments I have seen (although
|I did not see any of the SJ one) appear to be different in style
|than the 'main' basho.  There seems to be an element of showmanship,
|which does not occur (to such a large degree) in the regular basho.
|Certainly, I never saw a wrestler who had been picked up wiggling 
|his feet in the air in a regular basho, wheras at least 1 rikishi 
|did this in just about every knock-out tournament I saw.
|In general, I guess that there just is not so much riding on the
|outcome, and (a) as mentioned, there is a desire to avoid injury, and
|(b) it may be a chance to try out different techniques in a semi-serious
|environment.  I can easily see, though, that Konishiki/Akebono/Musashimaru
|would have taken the SJ basho very seriously.
