|
|The San Jose basho sounds more like hanasumo, the exhibition matches put on
|between the basho in smaller venues in Japan. I saw two of these, in
|Shizuoka-ken. The sumotori seemed pretty serious to me, and hey, we were right
|there by the ring. We got a chance to talk with Hoshiandes and a couple of the
|newer Hawai'ians, and came up with a memorable shot of my girlfriend seated next
|to Konishiki.
|
|With much less riding on the exhibition matches (no one is passing out envelopes
|to the winners of these bouts), it's not surprising that the rikishi don't put
|themselves out as much. But that shouldn't diminish one's enjoyment. Getting
|into one of the basho is little more than fantasy for most people; hanasumo is a
|good substitute.
