|
|
|Pre-basho gossip:
|
|Wakanohana has a new girlfriend, a 25-year old flight attendant.
|He's been keeping her privacy protected as much as possible, so
|there aren't many details. The press is expecting their wedding
|before too long, though. But then, what do they know?
|
|Takanohana has regained his weight and looks much better, though
|he's not really expected to challenge Akebono. His ozeki status
|should not be in jeopardy.
|
|Konishiki has gotten in worse shape lately and hasn't trained
|well. His knees are giving him a lot of trouble (no surprise).
|His citizenship application hasn't been decided yet, so he
|felt kind of obliged to fight this basho, but doesn't look to
|do well at all.
|
|Musoyama is the oyakatas' choice for best new rikishi this year.
|Kaio came in second.
|
|Winners: Losers: Technique:

|Kenko (1-0) Kaio (0-1) yorikiri
|Oginishiki (1-0) Misugisato (0-1) oshidashi
|Wakashoyo (1-0) Kotofuji (0-1) yorikiri
|Musoyama (1-0) Konishiki (0-1) okuridashi
|Kotonishiki (1-0) Daizen (0-1) yorikiri

|Takanohana (1-0) Tochinowaka (0-1) yorikiri
|Wakanohana (1-0) Kotonowaka (0-1) yorikiri
|Akebono (1-0) Tomonohana (0-1) okuritaoshi
|
|
|Hamanoshima won his first bout as a makunouchi rikishi, rather
|easily against failing Kirishima. The ex-ozeki just seems to
|have less strength each basho. Mainoumi didn't try his usual
|sneaky stuff, but then pulled off an utchari move to toss
|Kotoinazuma. Oginishiki kept up his fighting spirit and just
|confounded Misugisato. Musoyama read the scouting reports
|and got to Konishiki's side to easily force down the huge
|ex-ozeki. Akebono survived an early scare against the new
|san-yaku Tomonohana, in which the video showed the yokozuna
|had lost (it looked that way to me, anyhow). In the rematch,
|though, he prevailed over the former schoolteacher.
|
|Mata nee....
