|Wakanohana (12-3) Konishiki (6-9) okuridashi
|Akebono (13-2) Takanohana (7-8) hatakikomi
|
|In the tie-breaker, it was Akebono over Musashimaru by hikiotoshi.
|
|The Yokozuna gets his third straight yusho, and sixth overall.
|
|Awards:
|
|Kanto-sho (Fighting Spirit): Oginishiki
|Gino-sho (Technique): Tomonohana (2nd time)
|Shukun-sho (Outstanding Performance): Musashimaru
|
|The best records ended up at the top and bottom, as the higher maegashira
|and even komusubi had a rough time this basho. Tomonohana is a big
|surprise, as he was not expected to do well against the san-yaku, yet he
|gets kachikoshi and the Gino-sho again.
|
|Oginishiki came back from the depths of juryo and showed everyone that he
|wants to stay in makuuchi this time. Looks like the others could learn
|from his fighting spirit.
|
|Musashimaru was a vastly improved rikishi this basho, and could make it to
|ozeki if he keeps this up. Personally, I don't think he can live forever
|with just one technique (he doesn't seem to want to learn new ones), but
|he can sure shove like hell!
|
|Koshishiki will be sekiwake and Takanohana will be kadoban in January.
|Takanohana might've done well to heed his doctor's advice and not fight
|in this basho, but he's young and should be able to come back. Konishiki,
|though, is finished, IMO. He's 30 now, and _way_ too heavy. There's
|just no controlling himself anymore, and the others just have to get to
|one side and it's all over.
|
|Akebono faltered a bit the last few days, but still has a good deal of
|technique and stamina to work with that he didn't have 2 years ago. I
|see him being in charge for quite a while. He announced his girlfriend
|the other day: a Noriko Usui. She's 23 and quite a cutey. He says he
|hopes to marry her soon. Well, he just won another 5 million yen from
|the basho, so that should be a decent down payment on the wedding!
|
|See you in January.

|Mata nee....
