|Subject: Aki Basho: Final Results
|
|
|Being admittedly partial, I have declared my new baby as the
|winner of the basho. She was born Saturday afternoon. I was
|really lucky and got to stay there and see the birth (a rarity
|here in Japan)!!!
|
|As for the regular rikishi here are the results:
|
|East: West:
|----- -----
|
|Akebono 14-1
|Takanohana 12-3 Wakanohana 9-6
|Konishiki 0-2
|Musashimaru 8-7 Takanonami 10-5
| Kotonishiki 9-6
|Takatoriki 7-8 Kotonowaka 8-7
|
|Wakashoyo 5-10 Mitoizumi 4-10
|Kotofuji 6-9 Akinoshima 9-6
|Tochinowaka 6-9 Kotobeppu 5-10
|Kenko 7-8 Terao 6-9
|Higonoumi 6-9 Daizen 5-10
|Misugisato 8-7 Kasugafuji 7-8
|Kiraiho 5-10 Tokitsunada 7-8
|Minatofuji 5-10 Takamisugi 8-7
|Kitakachidoki 6-9 Oginohana 7-8
|Tomonohana 9-6 Daishoho 9-6
|Kyokudozan 8-7 Toyonoumi 7-8
|Kirishima 9-6 Daishoyama 8-7
|Kushinaumi 12-3 Tomoefuji 4-11
|Mainoumi 9-6 Kotoinazuma 9-6
|Tatsuhikari 2-13 Musoyama 9-6
|Tamakairiki 8-7
|
|Akebono has shown that he is the man to beat, and he has still
|improved and changed his style. One of the sports rags counted
|up, and he only won 3 times by oshidashi, which used to be his
|main game, and he won 5 times by yorikiri.
|
|Disappointments:
|
|Out of the maegashira 1-9, only 3 guys could get kachikoshi.
|Tomoefuji: hate to see ya go, but we'll see you back later.
|Tatsuhikari: take off, eh, you hoser!
|
|
|Bright spots:
|
|Musoyama looks pretty impressive at 9-6 in the majors.
|Akinoshima won his last 5 matches to get a decent record.
|
|
|I think it should be a really hard job for the Kyokai to set
|the banzuke for next basho. There will likely be some long
|jumps up (and down!) in the maegashira ranks. I wasn't too
|pleased the way they let Kushimaumi run his score up. The
|highest rank he faced was komosubi (just once). I mean, hey,
|he's not even in Futagoyama Beya! There's also some talk still
|going on about Takanohana's chances for Yokozuna. Personally,
|I'll be revolted if they give it to him. But the Kyokai is just
|dying to get a Japanese Yokozuna back in there. I don't think
|he's ready, and he definitely hasn't met the qualifications
|laid down during the Konishiki/Akebono confusion.
|
|Well, it's been. Can't say it was always fun, cuz the UNIX
|eunichs (neat term I heard somewhere) weren't very nice to me.
|Hope things are a little better for the next time around.
|
|See ya!
