|Someone asked earlier (I think it was here) about the first names
|of the shikona used by the rikishi. I was reading (as best I could
|in a Japanese sumo magazine) the banzuke for this basho and it
|listed both first and last names of the shikona. It turns out that
|for the Japanese rikishi, their first name is simply their true
|first names. The Americans all have first names that are Japanese
|names (the only one I can remember right now is the previously
|mentioned Akebono Tarou). Interestingly, Jose Flores full shikona
|is HoshiANDESu HOSE. I guess his oyakata is really big on
|Hoshiandesu keeping his identity as an Argentinian. Because
|HoshiTANGO is not in the Juryo, I couldn't find him on the banzuke
|so I didn't check up on him.
|
|Now for a basic question I really should know. I have noticed that
|Akebono now has those odd things dangling from his belt in his
|Kesho-Mawashi, as well as a large braided cord about his waist. In
|other photos I've seen of Yokozuna, it appears to me that these are
|part of the trappings that come with being a Yokozuna. Is that
|correct? Also, is it a Yokozuna think to do that cool dance he
|does?
|
|Finally, an earlier post asked about the attire of the rikishi when
|they came to America. When Konishiki threw out the first pitch at
|the SF Giants game, he was wearing a kimono. However, this sumo
|magazine showed many photos of rikishi wearing more traditional
|western clothing (i.e., Wakanohana and Takanohana wearing shorts
|and T-s on a golfing expedition, Kyoukudozan wearing swimming
|trunks and picking up on some white ladies at a yacht club, and
|even one rikishi doing his version of syncronized swimming, while
|another poor rikishi was wearing a tie-dyed tank top and those
|funny weight-lifter pants with velcro waistbands and funny colors).
|It also appeared that they all were given T-shirts as a promotional
|item, with all of them coming in one size (sumo size, I assume).
|For most of the rikishi this looked fine on them, but poor
|Kyoukudozan's shirt was so large on him that the holes for the
|armpits extended all the way out past his elbows. I would hate to
|see how Mainoumi looked in one of those things.
