Bingo!

Just a thought which occured to me after reading Steve's post. Does
anyone know if the Hawaiian wrestlers have ever changed names? I know
that Akebono did some kind of Kanji alteration when he got to Ozeki,
but I never quite understood it (explanations from the informed
welcome). I have never heard of them being called anything else,
but I am willing to be corrected.

Actually he haven't change his name Akebono, neither have Koni nor Musa.
But he added one stroke to complete kanji Akebono.
He and his master Azumazeki Oyakata decided to use incomplete kanji Akebono
without the one stroke until Akebono become Ozeki.
It is reported that Azumazeki Oyakata took the idea from the Daruma custom.

For those who are not familiar ,
Daruma is a kind of mascot doll.
At first, it is made without its eye painted.
When one have a wish or establish his goal(eg. pass an exam,or win election)
, he paint one of eyes on the Daruma doll.
And once his wish comes true or he achieves his goal, he paints another.
