Well here are the eagerly awaited final day results, thanks Tony for this
and the effort for the rest of the basho. With the ML now numbering 45,
it is quite large. I expect as this is it for another 2 months, unless
there are any tournaments in between, so the interest on this ML might die
down until the next basho. However, I'm still waiting on more
suggestions/help regarding setting this up as a proper ML or newsgroup as
I'm sure the numbers of subscribers will continue to grow. Also if you
have technique or historical questions about this great sport, or
gossip/commentary on the private lives of the no-hana brothers, the
Hawaiian trio, Takatoriki(whom I've heard will never make it to Ozeki as
he had an affair with a film star or something and it was frowned upon by
the Sumo Council-can anyone fill me in on this)etc. then for the moment,
until we arrange something else just use the "reply(to group)" function to
the latest ML message and it will go to all subscribers.
Yoroshiku, Pete.

HIGH NOON AT THE SUMO BASHO! Takanohana makes a funny face! AKEBONO-TAKANOHANA-W
AKANOHANA TIE! Musashimaru wins but he has to fight
like Akebono to pull it off. Mitiozumi is using his arm strength to win
matches. IT WAS THE FINAL DAY! NEXT BASHO, SEPTEMBER 13th!
Winner Loser Technique
Kasagifuji 8-6 Aogiyama 9-6 Hiki otoshi = pull down
Minatofuji 9-6 Daizen 9-6 Tusuki dashi = Twist down
Tomonohana 9-6 Tochinowaka 10-5 Tsuki dashi = Twist down
Kotofuji 11-4 Kenko 9-6 Hataki komi = Pull down
Toyonoumi 7-8 Kushimaumi 5-10 " "
Oginishiki 4-11 Takamisugi 7-8 Yori Kiri = Force out
Mainoumi 4-11 Hitachiryu 9-6 Shitate nage = Inside arm throw
Daishoyama 5-10 Kotoinazuma 5-10 Yori Kiri = Force out
Mitiozumi 9-6 Akinoshima 9-6 Hataki komi = Pull down
Akinoshima won the most Outstanding Rikishi award. Just a few days ago
he had beaten Akebono he a highly stlylistic fashion.
Daishohou 5-10 Tomefuji 5-10 Yori kiri = Force out
Kitachidoki 4-11 Tokitsunada 5-10 Okuri dashi = Rear crash down
Kyodozan 4-11 Oginohana 5-10 Utuchari dash = Pivot throw
Kotonowaka 8-7 Terao 8-7 Uwate nage =Outside arm throw
Kotonishiki 12-3 Kiraiho 8-6 Tsuki Dashi = Thrust out
Kotonishiki won the Fighting Spirit award and rightfully so. He was in
there with Takanohana, Wakanohana and Akebono with an equal record most
of the Basho.
Kirishima 3-12 Musigisato 5-10 Yori kiri = Force out
Wakashoyo 7-8 Higonoumi 8-7 Shitate nage = Inside arm throw
Kotobeppu 9-6 Takatoriki 8-7 Oshi dashi = Push out
Musashimaru 8-7 Takanonami 9-6 Oshi dashi = " "
Wakanohana 13-2 Konishiki 9-6 Yori kiri = Force out
Wakanohana won the Technical Award. I feel it should of went to Takanohana
Takanohana 13-2 Akebono 13-2 Oshi Dashi = Push out
Tie Breaker:
Akebono 15-2 Takanohana 13-3 Wakanohana 13-3
A THREE WAY TIE! Akebono-Takanohana-Wakanohana. When Takanohana beat
Akebono he made a funny looking face. It was a smile to himself with
his chin jutting out and upper lip out-streched. It was the kind of
face you see on a male child after he did something he thought was
really masculine or macho. Here is why: Akebono and Takanohana slammed
and bounced off of each other. Takanohana dove at Akebono practically in
the air and with his arm strength alone thrusted Akebono 3 or 4 feet
just out of the rings area. He was quite proud of himself and it showed.
A roch climber would call the move a "DYNO". He just lunged and took his
chances and it paid off.
A tie then ensued. Takanohana had just finished a long bout with
Konishiki and was panting heavily during his brothers fight with Akebono.
When he went up against Akebono his quads were weak and lost quickly.
Akebono fought him like he always fights. When Takanohana went to fight
the match had two false starts. One on Akebono and the other on Takanohana.
When it finally began Akebono bolted first and engulfed Takanohana around
the chest and ran him out of the ring and onto the floor. Ake nearly fell
on top of him. The crowd was disapointed. Very few smiles
Akebono received his trophy and was interviewed. They asked him about his
knee. It turns out he had an injury. He said that when you are a grand
champion you have to go out there and live with it like it or not.
They asked about the tie and he said that he was glad to make up the
loss to Takanohana so his "Boss" would be happy and not be mad at him.
He was asked if he would win the next one and he replied that it feels
good to win and that he would like to win them all. He left the Basho
wearing black driving away in a mid 80's white convertible Cadalac
waving to the crowd.
Musashimaru picked up a win to get into plus territory. A miracle I
appreciated. Mitiozumi has a new style now using his arms more and
Mainoumi ties for last. A very dismal showing that was painful to watch.
Thank you all for participating with me. Please E-Mail me with
any thing you would like to see changed or added and see you all
next Basho. Thank you very much Peter Kaub for getting this started.
Tony Austin
P.S. Next Super Nintendo Basho Tony-no-bono will have a name change.
His new name will be Ake-Tony
