Subject: Please forward to sumo list

Are you guys getting my reports on scj? I seem to get to see sumo a couple of
days before Tony, or the posts don't appear on my system in the same order or
something. Anyway, here are random replies to topics that have appeared on
this mailing list:

The retired yokozuna Futahagoro (previously Kitao):
"Konjou (spirit)" I would translate more as "gall" or "spunk", depending. What
he didn't have was "hinkaku" (elegance). That, BTW, is what they said
Konishiki lacked. They may have been right. Konishiki is entertaining, if
anything. I found a great interview of Konishiki in GQ December 1991 "sports"
column: "It's Lonely at the Topknot: This year, American-born sumo wrestler
Konishiki discovered that being the beggest thing in Japan is not all it's
cracked up to be". Check it out. It's a bit long to key in.

Masurao:
Masurao was nicknamed "White Wolf" after Chiyonofuji ("Wolf"). After a few
major upsets he pulled off, he was in the limelight, but for too brief a time.
I don't know what brought him down (health?), but he disappeared too soon.

Three-way ties:
I saw one playoff for the yusho between Hokutoumi, Konishiki and one other
rikishi. Yes, the first to win two in a row to takes the round-robin.
Hokutoumi won it, but I heard later there was some behind-the-scenes power
games going on. Sorry I don't know more. Also I don't know who gets to start
off. Maybe the highest-ranked.
