Dear Sumo fans,
Here are the final results, obtained over short-wave radio:
Wakanohana 13-2 beats Konishiki ??-??
Takanohana 13-2 beats Akebono 13-2
With the above three all at 13-2, there was a mitsudomoesen
(an all-against-all (tomoesen) with three participants).
This was what everybody (esp. the Waka and Taka fans) had hoped for.
However, the chance to see a bout between the two brothers vaporized
when Akebono first won against Wakanohana and then against Takanohana.
Wakanohana might have been weakened by an almost 2 min. bout against
Konishiki. Akebono then used the chance against Takanohana with a change
of tactics. It is rare that a leader before the last day looses both
the official bout and the playoff. Both Waka and Taka might also somewhat
have been frightened by having to fight against each other actually.
(I suppose they knew that Akebono, as yokozuna, would participate in
the first playoff bout, so that they were motivated to bring it to the
playoff, but then they didn't want to win a bout so that they didn't have
to fight against each other. That's just my speculations, but might
be true at least partly.)
This gives Akebono his long deserved first tournament victory as a yokozuna.
Wakanohana, on the other side, will be promoted to ohzeki.
Takanohana has a good chance to be promoted to yokozuna if he wins the next
tournament, because he "almost" won this one.
Sorry not to have more results, but I misset my alarm clock and just by
chance could catch the two last bouts of the main round.
Regards, Martin (another one).
