Well, my turn....
I have never been to Japan (yet) and was unable to attend the San Jose
basho (though I tried very hard to go). I had a friend of mine that
married a japanese woman and the both of them were going back to live for
good in Japan. This got me more interested in japanese culture where I
came across sumo. After reading a few books on the subject (Jessie's
sticks out in my mind), I got a much deeper understanding of what was
going on (it really wasn't just two fat guys belly-slamming each other). I
can catch the NHK telecasts (but since I don't speak japanese, it gets a
little hard to figure out some of the more complex issues (like who the
heck they are!).
I would also like to express my thanks for this mailgroup.
