Re: Introductions!

Hello,

I am an astronomer who, in what now is becoming a familiar story, became
hooked on sumo during a 5 month research sabbatical in Japan in 1990.
Actually, my (then) 13 year old son got me started by insisting on being
taken to a basho in Nagoya. He soon lost interest, but I haven't. I was
also at the Kokugikan once.

These days my only real time contact is via the net or email. On a delayed
basis, I get Sumo World and sometimes video tapes of Sumo Digest sent by
my (very thoughtful) friends in Tokyo. So far I haven't been able to find
it broadcast on any of the innumerable NYC channels that we get (via cable)
here in Princeton. If anyone knows of such a broadcast, please let me know!

I do still get back to Japan for a few weeks at a time occasionally (twice
this year in fact) and will be happy to post results if my visit ever falls
during a basho.

My favorite rikishi are Taka, Waka, Mainoumi, and (the now fading) Teraro.
So, as you see, I like technique more than the big guys who basicly just
rely on conservation of momentum, but Akebono is beginning to win me over
as a fan. I think he has handled his sudden rise to fame and success with
admirable grace and style.

I think somo is headed for some exciting days with a "new generation" of
great young rikishi struggling for dominance at the top. So, I also give
many thanks to Paul for setting this up and Tony for supplying us with
quick reports of the results.
