He's "smacking around" SEKITORI who should be able to take it - if they want
to make it. I go to keiko at a number of different heya, and have been to
degeiko, too. I've seen the yokozuna beat the crap ( to some people - to me,
it's teaching a lesson) out of Roho, Futeno and others - only to tell them
where THEY could improve. 

Beating the hell out of a sekitori is quite a bit different than teaching
the newbies at the stable how to "take" it. Of course, I would rather he not
do it to Taikai :-)

BTW, I saw Twilight Samurai and it was an excellent movie. Probably out on
DVD by now.
