I am sorry but I doubt it was "entertaining" for
Takamiskari. Asashoryu is the most powerful active
rikishi at the moment but precisely for the behavior
such as this, he could not be compared against the
greatest yokozunas.

Always fun to hear people try to think of reasons that Asashoryu can't be compared against the greatest yokozunas...

A yokozuna is more than just being
strong. He still has a great deal to learn about
sumodo and bushido.

Does he?

Takamisakari can be such an easy target to pick on
because of his training ethics, demeanor, mannerism,
emotional makeup etc but that is exactly the reason
Asashoryu should not go after him as the leading and
top rikishi. Regardless of circumstance and profession
(and even in Ozumo) bullying should never be
considered to be an acceptable behavior and conduct by
anyone when the victim has no recourse to respond.

While I am against the general kind of bullying, hazing, and pseudo-slavery that goes on in sumo heyas and is considered part of the "tradition", is what Asa did that bad? He "taught" Takamisakari a lesson about intensity during practice, an area that Takamisakari is notoriously lax in. Takamisakari is a maegashira rikishi with a winning record. He's fair game for the yokozuna. Don't you think, Joe, that Takamisakari has a concentration/intensity issue that holds him back? He's got the tools to be sanyaku, but lacks the maturity it seems.

I think Asashoryu is quite unhappy with his fellow rikishi in terms of how they practice between yushos...some of that spilled out on Takamisakari, but I think Asa has a point. How do any of them hope to ever become a yokozuna if they are all afraid to confront him in practice?

I bet Takamisakari rose in Asashoryu's and other rikishi's eyes as he at least entered the dohyo with the yokozuna.

Sumo IS a martial art with lots of violent body contact, its not tennis, and shouldn't be completely judged in comparison to school yards. One of the things Asa and I think Akebono and Takanohana before him have in common, is that they had a warrior's attitude, and wanted to confront, stare down, demoralize, and destroy their opponents. (I'm not sure Mushashimaru ever had that, in comparison). I see some rikishi who have that (Kaio, Chiyotaikai, Kokkai) but others who leave me wondering (Miyabiyama, Wakanosato...)

Aren't yokozunas supposed to lead by example and set a tone? Seems to me Asa hits the right notes in general. He wins, he respects the sport, and he never steps lightly onto the dohyo.

Your first line is "Heart". Isn't that what Asashoryu is getting at?
